First Day Lesson
Pen Practice
Value Charts
100 Squares of Pen Patterns
Landscape Practice
For this assignment I used the patterns from the 100 squares assignment to fill the landscape outline. Using the patterns I added value and direction to show the detail of the drawing.
Pen and Ink Final Project
Self Evaluation:
1. The composition of my piece has a focal point at the boat in the river and every other part of the project surrounds it. The size and overlap of the fences and the bridge give the illusion of the boat moving further away from you. I think it is a successful composition as every piece of my drawing flows around the main point and gives a realistic look by the placement of the objects.
2. Texture and pattern are important in my composition as it helps portray each object realistically, especially the water. The pattern of the water gets bigger as it gets closer to you to show how it's not a flat part of the drawing and moves backwards and the texture of the water gives the flow of a river.
3. Value is important in the project to give depth and define each object as an individual. The value differences give the 3D look and an outline to differentiate each part of the project.
4. I think my craftsmanship was neat but could be worked on in areas of adding value. Overall my lines and patterns had a neat finish but some parts looked empty or too flat.
5. The practice in patterns and value gave me an idea of the patterns that will fit certain objects, how to keep patterns consistent and neat, and how to add depth to objects depending on the light source. These skills helped create the realistic look of my drawing.
6. It is important to apply the concepts we learned in class to pen and ink projects as they require more values to make it detailed just using black color and the patterns need to be precise and clean which takes practice using the pen. To do that you have to understand how depth and composition work and how to use different patterns to show value and detail.
7. As a growing artist this project has definitely introduced me to pen and improved my skills on it. I'm now more comfortable using pen to draw and have more knowledge on patterns and values to make a drawing.
8. If I could recreate this piece I would add more darker values and some pattern to the sky to enhance it. I think you can see the value differences but overall it is a lighter pattern drawing which I would change to be a little darker.
